Following approval by Government on 27 September 2025, the Electricity Costs Support Grant – Credit Union Members Scheme has been established to provide targeted financial assistance to long-standing credit union
members in recognition of sustained increases in household energy costs.
Under this scheme, an electricity grant of €1,500 will be made available to eligible applicants. The grant has been authorised by relevant regulatory and sectoral bodies as a dedicated support measure
for individuals who have demonstrated long-term savings commitment within the credit union movement.
Purpose of the Scheme
The scheme aims to support households facing exceptional electricity cost pressures while recognising the contribution of credit
union members who have maintained active savings accounts over an extended period.
Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for the Electricity Costs Support Grant, applicants must:
- Be an active member of a recognised credit union;
- Have maintained continuous savings with their credit union for a
minimum of five (5) years prior to the date of application;
- Hold a domestic electricity account in their name;
- Meet any additional verification requirements set out
by their credit union and scheme administrators.
Aplication of Grants
Due to the limited funding available, grants will be awarded
on a queue-based application system.
- Applications will be
processed strictly in the order in which they are received.
- Once the allocated funding has been fully committed,
no further grants will be issued under this scheme.
- Eligible applicants will be notified of
the outcome of their application by their credit union.
Payment Method
Approved grants will be credited directly to the member’s credit union account balance. The funds may then be used by the member to meet electricity-related expenses or other household energy costs, subject to the
standard terms and conditions of their credit union account.
Oversight and Aministration
The scheme will operate under the oversight of relevant regulatory authorities in cooperation with participating credit unions. Credit unions will be responsible for verifying membership status, savings history, and eligibility, while
ensuring compliance with governance and regulatory requirements.
Application Process
Eligible credit union members may submit an application through their credit union once the scheme opens.
Applicants will be required to provide:
- Proof of credit union membership and savings history;
- Identification and proof of address;
- Details of their domestic electricity account.
